Somerset opens the door on the future of interpretation in museums, exhibits and science centers, by bringing a unique approach that merges artificial intelligence technology, an organic learning interface, and the ability to deliver as much information as suits the user’s interests, at their own pace and level of understanding. Through a strategic partnership with Intellitar, Inc., Somerset will deliver Intellitar’s Intelligent Avatar Platform™ (IAP) to selected markets. Based upon patent-pending technology, the IAP allows us to create intelligent docents that can provide an unprecedented level of tailored information to deliver an automated, yet truly interactive teaching experience.
The core of the Intelligent Avatar Platform is the “brain.” The brain is the collection of acquired knowledge and life experiences from an individual or subject matter expert assembled into a knowledge base. This experience knowledge can come from a single individual or from multiple individuals creating a composite brain on one or many different subjects. The brain can also distinguish between long-term and short-term information and can access information from an internal database or from designated web sites. The user can interact with and retrieve the totality of information in the IAP’s brain through the on-screen avatar interface or persona.
The persona starts with a photo realistic representation of an individual, image of an historic figure, or illustration of fictional character. This is digitized into the IAP’s Creator Console via an imaging system and is given realistic facial movements and emotional expressions. It can also be given a level of individual personality corresponding to the person upon whom it is based.
By creating a unique voice or selecting a voice from our digital voice library, the persona responds audibly to spoken or typed questions, providing the user with a real time response. In addition to the knowledge originally stored in the IAP’s brain, it has the ability to constantly modify and augment itself as it interacts with each user. In this way it adapts to the specific characteristics of its use. Identical Intelligent Avatar’s placed into two different environments will end up with different personalities and knowledge based on the unique interactions of each user.
The IAP also provides a solution for ADA compliance by providing an audio-only information source for the visually impaired. Different text modes can be provided for those with various degrees of sight limitation or for the hearing impaired. Somerset is working with Intellitar to bring this technology to mobile platforms to further expand the technology. This will allow mobility limited visitors a greater interpretive experience.
